I Don’t Want To Be A Sex Object and Neither Should You

So if you haven’t heard of Ted Talks, then I demand you drop everything you’re doing and watch some of them. What are Ted Talks? They’re conferences held around the globe that feature speakers that touch on different topics, from technology to women’s rights to everyday inspiration. You will feel empowered and inspired and enlightened and awed and all these other great things immediately after you watch one or all of them.

I quite recently watched one of these Ted Talks from advocate Caroline Heldman called The Sexy Lie, in which she discusses why being a sex object is not empowering and how our culture has its phasers set to objectification. I won’t go into it too much further because I want you all to watch it for yourselves and go into it with a clean mindset. I’ll just leave you with a quote as some food for thought: “We compete with other women for our own self esteem because we see it as this finite resource.”

Hilary Clinton Defends Reproductive Rights While Also Winning My Heart

Hilary Clinton is incredible. She is outspoken and defends the rights of women and education to an incredible extent. I wish there were more officials like her in office, ones that genuinely care about the people they serve instead of pushing an agenda set by who knows. Her focus and drive are inspirational – I can only hope that one day I am as strong as she is. I’m praying to every deity out there is that she will run for president in 2016.

With all that being said, Hilary recently responded to a question regarding whether or not the government should support reproductive rights. She is flawless. She is unafraid. She is my hero.

My cousin introduced a video to me today from a poetry slam contest, and I think it’s incredibly important for everyone to watch. Sons” by Rudy Francisco and Terisa Siagatonu delves into the topics of rape culture and the judicial system for juvenile delinquents. It’s hard for me to find the words to describe it, because it left me speechless. Every issue they discuss they hit they nail on the head. The points they made about Steubenville were incredibly accurate, and even more haunting because of the rising situation in Missouri. This is by far one of the most powerful videos I have watched in a long time, and I hope to hear what you all think of it.

Malala Yousafzai Leaves the World Speechless

Malala Yousafzai, the young girl who was shot by the Taliban after speaking up for education and women’s rights in Pakistan recently appeared on Jon Stewart. Yousafzai is the youngest person ever to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, and though Yousafzai is only 16, she speaks with wisdom beyond her years. If I could recommend you do anything today, if would be to take 6 minutes out of your day to watch this. I can guarantee you will thank yourself for it later.

Why Raven-Symoné Was Disney’s Greatest Achievement

I remember a time long , long ago, when Disney wasn’t just all musicals and the shows on the Disney Channel covered topics like the trials and tribulations of growing up a teenage girl, or that racial inequality was still present. The show That’s So Raven was a dream come true for all those reasons- Raven was a strong, curvy, African American women who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she believed in and chase after her dreams. How often do you see that anymore?

The video below is an exert from the movie Cheetah Girls, a movie about a diverse group of young girls trying to make it big in the music industry. I know, I know, a Disney musical, not original at all. But the message that this movie gave is powerful and commonly overlooked because it was a Disney Channel movie. It was a message that gave me hope, that I could go on and reach my fullest potential, but I could do it on my terms, without changing my appearance or compromise my dream.

Raven Symoné was a Disney hero, and still a personal hero to this day. Rest with grace, Cheetah Girls, rest with grace.
